Viper Pilots are responsible for flying a Colonial ship's compliment of Vipers during escort missions, ship-to-ship battles and flying Combat Air Patrols. Viper pilots normally keep the same craft until it is rendered inoperable, either through damage or destruction. As such, it is customary for a pilot to have their call-sign on a plaque on the side of the outer hull, just under the canopy.
Viper pilots come under the direct authority of their Squadron Leaders, followed by the Air Wing Executive Officer and the Commander Air Group.
